However, both artists share slightly different views on approaches to art.
Nock, a native to Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, believes that there are no local, cultural influences in his work.

“For home-grown visual artists there is little along the lines of the historical influences,” says Nock. Instead, Nock believes that the lack of a visual tradition in his home town is a positive aspect, as it allows him to practice with a variety of art forms.
Nock has videotaped the production of Red Stripe and Guantanamo Orange and the video of this production will also be featured in A Rare Glimpse.
“My goal is to bring painting to the 21st century,” says Nock. “I began this achievement by abandoning the traditional painting surface for one that’s much more contemporary.” Instead, he substitutes the canvas for coloured, corrugated plastic. The plastic comes in a variety of colours, and therefore tints his paintings in a variety of colours.
On the other hand, Zimmerman, who has lived and worked in Inverness County since 1974, acknowledges a more direct connection to Cape Breton Island’s landscape. For him, simplicity and traditional notions of beauty suggest aspects of 19th century Romanticism.
“My work draws upon several art practices indebted to architecture,” says Zimmerman. “My photo work, for instance, begins with the construction of scale models, that when photographed, appear to represent real architecture.” Landmarks of Industrial Britain is the title of this latest series of work.
In this exhibit, Zimmerman’s black and white prints have been assembled into an architectural portfolio suggesting earlier 19th century printing techniques. His work has been showcased in many solo and group exhibits over the past 17 years and reviewed in numerous books, catalogues, and articles. Zimmerman has received a number of awards and grants.
Nock’s artistic career has also taken off, as he has been the recipient of several grants, and the subject of many exhibits.
Both artists will discuss their artwork on Tuesday, December 4 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The community is welcome to attend.

CBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-20450826026150169682007-10-16T15:32:00.000-03:002007-10-16T15:43:24.923-03:00announcement - local art exhibition - Peintres d'aujourd'huiI want to pass along news of an upcoming exhibition taking place at St. Patrick's Church (87 Esplanade) .

Peintres d'aujourd'hui is an exhibition of painted works by Kent Senecal and Marc Brzustowski occuring at St. Patrick's Church, with an opening reception Friday October 19, 2007 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm, marking the first fine art exhibition in St. Patrick's museum since its recent renovation.
This exhibition is presented by Centre Communautair Etoile de l'Acadie in collaboration with The Old Sydney Society.

Kent will be exhibiting at Cape Breton University Art Gallery in September 2008 and Marc's current exhibition UPSIDE-DOWN-NORTH: General Delivery-Meat Cove Painted Pictures is on display at Cape Breton University Art Gallery until October 24.

Cheers,
SuzanneCBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-91772235447777503252007-10-12T15:07:00.000-03:002007-10-12T15:09:27.825-03:00reminder... extended hours tomorrow!!!Hello All,
Just a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday October 12, the Art Gallery will be open from 12 - 5 pm, with artist Marc Brzustowski giving an artist's talk from 2 - 3:00 pm!!!
See you then,
SuzanneCBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-61496697866842762272007-09-25T11:21:00.000-03:002007-09-25T11:31:04.592-03:00Mark on your Calendar - Artist's Talks and Extended HoursHello All!
This is a reminder to mark your calendar and free up an afternoon to attend one of Marc Brzustowski's artist's talks!!
Brzustowski will be guiding visitors through his exhibition UPSIDE-DOWN-NORTH at Cape Breton University Art Gallery October 9, 10, 11, 12 AND 13 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. Hard to believe but it's a fact. And what better way to kick off the unofficial end of summer, the start of a new semester, and return to shorter days than an awesome exhibition at Cape Breton University Art Gallery. I am pleased to announce that UPSIDE-DOWN-NORTH: General Delivery-Meat Cove Painted Pictures by Marc Brzustowski opened on Saturday September 8 to a stellar crowd.
This exhibition of oil paintings demonstrates the beauty of the landscapes and the people of Meat Cove and vicinity. The show includes landscape paintings of the area during the four seasons, in addition to portraits depicting the citizens of the village, and pieces portraying their working and social lives.Brzustowki says, “I feel that it is necessary to turn upside-down our prejudices in order to overcome the ignorance that lies at their foundation. If this exhibition makes some small contribution in that regard it would be successful beyond the visual character I hope to give it.”
Brzustowski also worked with nineteen students from Meat Cove, Capstick and Bay St. Lawrence on weekly sketching and painting excursions; of this he says:
"The idea behind the art group was to get the students to express in images their feelings about things they admire where they live. It was also a chance for individuals to develop drawing and painting skills. The group faced obstacles in its efforts as most of our work was done outside. Wind, rain and biting flies made our work difficult at times, but the enthusiasm of the participants never diminished and the result is the artwork you see here."
These young artists' work is featured in the reading room.
The artist will be giving talks on October 9, 10, 11, and 12 in the Art Gallery from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and there is no fee to participate.
Cheers,
Suzanne
CBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-63768182855752158862007-08-09T12:12:00.000-03:002007-08-09T12:20:57.104-03:00Announcing Extended Hours for August!!I'd like to announce the Art Gallery's extended hours for August!
Cape Breton University Art Gallery will be open on

Wednesday August 15 & 22 from 9:30 am - 8:00 pm
AND Saturday August 25 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

InHereOutThere ends on August 25 so be sure to take advantage of these extended hours.CBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-86900597577228324182007-07-25T11:27:00.001-03:002008-12-09T23:56:13.175-04:00recent gallery photosHere are some photos of recent activities in the Art Gallery. We've had an amazing turnout in the past few months and it's been wonderfully rewarding.
On the update front: work is arriving for InHereOutThere and I'll be picking the rest of it up next week. Soon i'll be off to the University and College Art Gallery Association of Canada conference in Montreal and will be announcing, upon my return, the successful applicant for the summer position of Junior Registrar.
Plans are underway for the first exhibition of the fall school term (Upside Down North by Marc Brzustowski) and lots of educational programming will complement this exhibition featuring the landscapes and people of Meat Cove, Cape Breton Island.
Stay tuned for updates regarding InHereOutThere and the exhibition synopsis for the second half of 2007.
Cheers,
SuzanneCBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-11833327675867048952007-05-08T15:46:00.000-03:002008-12-09T23:56:14.997-04:00Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062297528962326498" style="FLOAT: left; It's been quite a while since we here at the CBU Art Gallery have had time to update the blog. Actually it's been a while since Suzanne has had time to update the blog which is why the task has been bestowed upon me. Tana, the trusty new intern of the CBU Art Gallery!

OK. So let's get right down to business.

On May 1 we had the opening for Senior Investigation, part of the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board Annual Student Art Show, Art Investigation 007. The turn out for this show was great. 200+ people showed up to view and celebrate the artists and their work which was curated by the students following a workshop with Suzanne. This exhibit will be up until May 24

May 4 was the official opening for Recent Works by Kristen Doyle & Bell Fraser. The Turn out again was great. We had about 94 appreciative fans of Kristen and Bell's work show up that night. The refreshments were awesome and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.

If you get a chance you should definitely come check out the show, which will be on until June 1.

A few weeks ago all the volunteers of the Gallery and Suzanne got together and had a "padded block" party at which they made special padded blocks to help store the permanent collection. Everyone had a great time and got alot of work done. (Hope I'm around for the next one) We are currently awaiting the arrival of a new rack type system thing. Above are some pictures taken at the party.

As for right now we are getting ready for the next show. "In Here Out There," part of Undercurrents: A VANS Exhibition Project curated by Suzanne A. Crowdis is scheduled to open June 8 and will continue until August 24. This exhibition will feature works by Nova Scotian artists that questions and confronts the phenomena of isolation and localization simultaneously existing with transcendence and universality. For more information on this show check out the Programming Synopsis posted below.

Also, work has begun on the new website for the CBU Art Gallery. It is being designed by a fellow NSCC intern, Christine MacLeod. Check back for updates on that.

Well that's about it for now. I added some photos above from Brian Geary's show, the padded block party, the poster for the Senior Investigation exhibit as well as the poster for Recent works by Kristen Doyle & Bell Fraser's exhibit and from the opening reception for that show. Sorry it's so messy looking.

Until next time, later gaters!

Tana Yhard

CBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17964496.post-15331937951708394482007-04-13T15:22:00.000-03:002007-04-13T15:36:29.882-03:00reminder of Brian Geary's Walk & TalkJust a reminder that on Monday, April 16, at 7:00 pm, Brian Geary will lead a Walk & Talk through his exhibition, Subdivisions, currently on display at Cape Breton University Art Gallery.
As always, there is no admission and everyone is welcome.CBU Art Galleryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14466554813656835315noreply@blogger.com0
