overdue update - Junior Registrar update & programming synopsis to August

The opening for the latest exhibition was last Friday night which goes to show you how behind the times I've been with this blog! We had a great turnout... around 70 appreciative fans of Brian Geary's work.
As for the updates... the blog might become a thing of the past, as action has begun on a new Art Gallery website [chorus of angels singing]! April is turning out to be an extremely busy month what with planning upcoming exhibitions and writing material for them, and constructing a document that's not quite an annual report, not quite a newsletter commemorating our 10th year in this space and the launch of the Art Gallery's membership campaign (slated to launch in September). The Gallery is also accepting an intern from NSCC Marconi Campus soon and moving ahead with infrastructure recommendations and a lot of wishing, hoping, praying, and dreaming at this exact moment.
Upcoming as well is the hiring of a Junior Registrar with funding from the Canadian Museums Association via Young Canada works in Heritage Organizations. Pass along the following to anyone you think might be interested and qualified.

The Cape Breton University Art Gallery, located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, invites applications from candidates aged 16 to 30 for the position of Junior Registrar. Potential candidates will have, or be near completion of, a BFA/BA degree with a major in Art History. If completed, the candidate intends to pursue graduate studies or professional training in the field. If the candidate does not have this educational background, they should demonstrate a similar understanding and education, a strong interest in art and art history or data management. Additional training in collections management or comparable experience with a small art collection is beneficial. Experience with handling artwork, removal from frames, and conducting an inventory is preferred.
Computer skills are essential. The candidate must be proficient in database creation and use, all aspects of word processing, internet use, digital camera use, and be familiar with scanners and general office equipment.
The ideal candidate must be very detail oriented, patient, and have a good sense of organization and time-management. This person will work equally well in a team environment or alone, will be adept at making first-time visitors comfortable with their strong interpersonal skills, accommodating requests for various types of information, and excellent at multi-tasking. A sense of humour would be an asset. A driver’s license is required for this position, as the candidate may be required to pick up or deliver materials outside of the University at a moment’s notice.

The position will be available from June 11 to August 31, 2007, presuming funding is secured.
The deadline to apply is
May 11, 2007.
All applications must be submitted to:

Suzanne A. Crowdis, Art Gallery Coordinator
Cape Breton University Art Gallery
PO Box 5300, 1250 Grand Lake Road

Bell Fraser is a well-known Cape Breton artist and owner of Cape Breton Clay. Although perhaps better known as a maker of functional ceramics, Fraser is also an accomplished painter, whose treatment in paint of natural subject is as captivating as her handling in clay. Her work belies a deep connection to the ocean and the bounty of the natural world.

Kristen Doyle recently moved home to Sydney after completing her BFA at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Doyle will present her most recent creations.
